Downtown Filming Slowed Last Year

Published: Friday, February 3, 2006 4:06 PM PST
Although some Downtown residents may not believe it, there was actually less filming in the area last year than in 2004. Data released last week by FilmL.A., the nonprofit liaison between the city and production companies that issues filming permits, showed that crews used the Central City 6,154 days during 2005, down from 6,448 production days in 2004 (2003, in comparison, had 5,130 days). Overall, location shoots in the Los Angeles area rose 4% last year, a modest gain compared to the 19% growth in 2004.

FilmL.A. President Steve MacDonald credited the reduction in Downtown filming to the area's influx of residents. Community groups in places like the Arts District have been vocal about a lack of parking and loud noise during production. MacDonald thinks the concerns discourage location scouts. "When you have more and more people that are moving in and living in converted lofts or new buildings, it presents some challenges in being able to do the filming that was done there before there were any residents," he said.

For 2006, MacDonald said he would like to keep the number of production days Downtown stable and make up for the losses by increasing shoots in other areas. "We want production in the region," he said. "If it's slightly going down in Downtown, then we need to find other areas within the region to push it," he said.
